Three easy houseplants for every room from Hillier Garden Centres

Houseplants are an easy way to add life, colour and character to your home, but choosing the right plant for your space makes all the difference. Light levels, warmth and humidity vary from room to room, and plants that suit their surroundings will always look healthier and be easier to care for. To help make choosing simpler, Emma Fell, Head of Horticulture at Hillier Garden Centres, shares three reliable houseplants and where they thrive best in the home. 

Monstera – Swiss cheese plant 

“If you’re looking to make a statement in a living room or an open-plan space, Monstera (Swiss cheese plant) is a brilliant choice. Its large, glossy leaves instantly add impact and create a relaxed, indoor jungle feel. Monsteras enjoy bright, indirect light and a warm spot away from harsh sunshine, which can scorch the leaves. Water when the top layer of compost feels dry, and feed during spring and summer to support healthy growth. Given the right conditions, it’s a rewarding plant that quickly becomes a focal point.” 

Sansevieria – Snake plant 

“Sansevieria, better known as snake plants, are ideal if you want greenery without too much maintenance. They're incredibly resilient and happy in everything from bright rooms to lower-light areas, making them perfect for home offices, hallways or bedrooms. Their upright, architectural leaves suit smaller spaces, while their slow growth means they won’t outgrow their spot too quickly. Allow the compost to dry out between waterings, as they prefer drier conditions and are much happier with a little neglect than too much attention.” 

Spathiphyllum – Peace lily 

“Spathiphyllum, commonly called peace lilies, are a lovely option for bathrooms or bedrooms, where humidity is naturally higher. Their elegant white flowers and deep green leaves bring a calm, fresh feel to a space. They cope well with lower light levels, although they’ll flower best in brighter positions out of direct sun. Keep the compost lightly moist and remove faded blooms to keep the plant looking tidy. Peace lilies are very good at letting you know when they need watering – a slight droop is usually all the reminder they need.”
