As spring approaches, gardeners are reminded of last years challenges, particularly the surge in slug populations due to 2024’s wet and mild conditions, these pests caused widespread plant damage, leaving many seeking effective solutions.

Nemasys, the UK’s sole nematode manufacturer, urges gardeners to take early action by applying Nemaslug 2.0. This proactive step can safeguard cherished plants and ensure a thriving garden in the months ahead.

What is Nemaslug 2.0?

Nemaslug 2.0 contains from 12 to 250 million naturally occurring, microscopic, colourless worms (depending on pack size and size of treatment area) These nematodes, specifically Phasmarhabditis californica, actively seek out and eliminate garden slugs, protecting crops and ornamental plants.

Widely used by professional gardeners and growers, beneficial nematodes offer a proven and effective solution for controlling common garden pests. They infiltrate slugs, releasing a lethal bacterium that ultimately leads to their demise. Inside the dead slug, the nematodes multiply, producing a new generation that continues the cycle. Once slug populations decrease, nematode numbers naturally return to normal soil levels.

Why apply Nemaslug in spring

Springtime sees an abundance of juvenile slugs, which are particularly voracious. If left unchecked, they can cause significant damage before plants establish themselves. Applying Nemaslug in early spring can substantially reduce these pests before they mature, offering up to six weeks of protection per treatment. Regular applications from March to September will help maintain control over slug populations, allowing plants to flourish.

How to apply Nemaslug 2.0

Applying nematodes is straightforward and as simple as watering the garden.

  1. Mix: Combine the Nemaslug contents with water, following the packet's instructions.
  2. Apply: Distribute the mixture over affected areas using a watering can or sprayer.

For optimal results:

  • Timing: Apply in the early morning or late afternoon to prevent UV damage to the nematodes.
  • Moisture: Keep the soil moist for at least two weeks post-application to encourage nematode movement.
  • Reapplication: Reapply every four to six weeks throughout the growing season to maintain long-term protection.

A proactive spring application of Nemaslug can set the stage for a healthier, more resilient garden, keeping slugs at bay before they become a major problem.
