As the festive season approaches, many of us are already picturing twinkling lights, beautifully dressed trees and cosy evenings surrounded by family and friends. This year, Hillier Garden Centres has revealed the four key decorating trends set to define Christmas 2025 – ranging from timeless traditions to fresh inspiration to help every home shine in its own unique way.

Tristan Sissons, Christmas Buyer at Hillier, shares the festive themes set to capture imaginations this season and how to bring them to life.

Classic Christmas

“For those who treasure timeless elegance, Classic Christmas remains a go-to. Think indulgent, rich tones mixed through with greens and golds, with Christmas red taking centre stage. Decorations lean toward luxurious and tasteful, featuring bold traditional elements like bows, nutcrackers and fruits.

“A truly classic tree is defined by its ornaments, so look to glass baubles in deep reds and greens, paired with gold ribbons, with a traditional star or angel on top to bring the look together. Don’t forget garlands and wreaths woven through with elements of gold to create a refined finish that sparkles under candlelight, elevating the warmth and sophistication of your home.

“This trend is all about maintaining a refined, elevated look while celebrating the familiar charm of the holiday season.”

Winter Garden

“Inspired by nature, Winter Garden is the natural evolution of last year’s popular Winter Woodland theme. While Woodland focused on rustic forest charm, Winter Garden takes the look further by adding warmth, colour and a touch of floral elegance.

“This theme combines cosy natural textures with snowy highlights and introduces this year’s new signature colour purple fig – a rich, sophisticated shade that instantly elevates festive décor. The Winter Garden tree feels lush and abundant, with oversized leafy foliage and snow-dusted branches creating a garden-meets-fairytale effect. Baubles in soft blush, sage and fig tones sit along frosted roses, glitter-dusted butterflies and delicate floral picks. Garden-inspired ornaments – from charming robins and owls to playful snails, foxes and squirrels – bring a sense of whimsy, while sparkling fairies and dragonflies add a magical twist.

“To finish the look, weave in lace-style bows or metallic ribbons for a touch of refinement. Winter Garden is all about layering nature to create an enchanting indoor sanctuary.”

Arctic Wonderland

“For those drawn to a cooler palette, Arctic Wonderland offers a frosty, magical atmosphere. Featuring blues, whites, silvers and golds – with night blue emerging as a standout accent – this trend captures the serene beauty of winter.

“Sparkling polar bears, penguins and owls bring character and charm to the décor, while icy baubles, glittering snowflakes and frosted branches create the impression of a snowy landscape. Fill your tree with a mixture of matte and shimmering ornaments in crisp whites and deep blues, then add statement icicles and frosted stars to heighten the wintry feel.

“On the tree, cool toned lights are key to setting the mood, casting a soft, comforting glow that balances the crisp palette. Arctic Wonderland is the ideal choice for creating a calm, enchanting ambience that transports you to a serene winter escape.”

Colourful Christmas

“At the other end of the spectrum, Colourful Christmas injects fun and vibrancy into festive decorating. This trend celebrates bold colour at its brightest, with hot pinks, purples, teals and golds taking centre stage.

“Playful characters bring a sense of nostalgia, from retro robots and disco ball Santas to roller skates and sweet inspired baubles, making this a theme that appeals to both children and adults with a sense of fun. Tree décor is unapologetically maximalist – oversized baubles, glittering garlands and sparkling ornaments layered together to create a joyful statement.

“Touches of Classic Christmas are still present in shapes like nutcrackers and traditional figures, but given a lively, technicolour twist. Colourful Christmas is designed to make people smile, filling the home with energy, laughter and festive fun.”

Editors notes

“To inspire the creation of green living spaces for now and the future” Hillier is one of the leading names in the horticultural industry, with 160 years of growing and retail experience.

Founded in 1864 by Edwin Hillier, the company remains a family-run nursery with the fifth generation now actively involved in the family business as it continues to grow.

Not only is Hillier the largest producer of semi-mature trees in Europe and grower of over one million plants at its Hampshire nursery, but it also employs over 750 staff across its nursery, amenity trees and 22 garden centre divisions and is a flourishing multi-million pound company. It proudly holds the world record for the most consecutive gold medals awards at the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with 74 wins.

As one of the leading growers in the UK, Hillier is involved in many peat-free initiatives, including the RHS Peat-Free Fellowship, the largest peat-free collaborative research project globally. The company was amongst the first nurseries to become 100% peat-free across both its production nursery and retail garden centres, and all Hillier plants are grown in peat-free compost.

Recent successes for the company include the launch of its online shop, the substantial redevelopment of Hillier Garden Centre Newbury and the acquisition of the Rosebourne Garden Centre Group in November 2022, as well as sponsorship of BBC Gardeners’ World Live and BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair, and the incredibly popular free ‘Hillier Gardening Club’ loyalty program which now has over half a million members.

Renowned for being a leading breeder of plants in the UK at its 100% peat-free nursery in Hampshire, each year Hillier introduces amazing new varieties. Many of these have become essentials in British gardens and the company continues with the tradition of innovation and the introduction of new garden plants in the present day.
