Langley Castle, a four-star medieval castle hotel located close to Haydon Bridge, has become a finalist in the national Visit England Awards for Excellence 2023.
The team, headed up by Executive General Manager, Margaret Livingstone-Evans, have been advised they will be awarded either a Gold, Silver or Bronze award – the highest accolades in English tourism.
Langley Castle has been shortlisted in the Resilience and Innovation category of the national awards, having scooped Gold at the North East Tourism Awards. It now competes against just two other regional finalists, from across the 16 regions that had regional winners, at the national finals.
Langley Castle was highly praised by its regional judges, having innovated tremendously and created compelling tourism collateral that can entertain and inform guests both ahead of a stay and during their time at Langley Castle. Its new product development has been exciting and it has done everything possible to get on the radar of staycationers and visitors from overseas.
It will now head to the Visit England Awards for Excellence ceremony, to be held on June 7 at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. The irony of this is that Langley Castle has many aspects that bear a remarkable similarity to elements in the Harry Potter books and J K Rowling visited the castle before their publication, so may have been inspired by some of Langley Castle’s features and history.
Margaret Livingstone-Evans says, “Being a national finalist in the English tourism industry’s top awards is just a fantastic achievement for a hotel of our size and is testimony to all the hard work that has gone into our product development and creative ideas.
“We have to fight hard to get into the spotlight, given our size and rural location, so we are delighted the judges have recognised the tremendous effort of the entire team. We do not know which of the three possible awards we have won in our category, but whether it is gold, silver or bronze, it will help demonstrate the Northumberland tourism sector’s commitment to excellence and innovation.”

Langley Castle, built in 1350, is located in Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland and is one of the few authentic, fortified medieval castles in England. It has a rich history, with strong links to Jacobite rebellions, is located just a stone's throw from the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall and boasts features including battlements, seven-feet-thick walls, window seats set into the walls and the best example of medieval garderobes in Europe. It is one of the most exquisite wedding venues in the north and also offers a wide range of options when it comes to exclusive use, with the castle being available for weddings, family celebrations, Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, D&D-style events and a wide variety of corporate functions.
