Iconic children's characters The Wombles are making a comeback with their first retrospective, interactive exhibition opening at the Heights of Abraham visitor attraction in the Peak District on 18 July 2025.

WOMBLE MANIA looks back at the characters’ history since the 1970’s and demonstrates how The Wombles’ eco-conscious message is relevant to a new generation of fans today.

Inspired by the theme tune lyrics ‘underground, overground, Wombling free’, the attraction charts The Wombles journey from book to screen.

From Elisabeth Beresford’s original 1968 book to the TV animation, films and pop songs that followed, visitors can relive the ‘womble mania’ of the 70’s and 80’s.

The showcase also features The Wombles of today, via the latest new books, music and CGI reboot on YouTube – all of which demonstrate the characters’ environmental purpose.

The walk-through, undercover attraction presents seven scenes, starting with a whimsical recreation of Elisabeth Beresford’s study.

From writing study to artistic representation of a child’s bedroom of the time, the display features exclusive vintage memorabilia including games and plush. The exhibition then takes a dive into the The Burrow, where The Wombles lived, and introduces the main characters. It further takes a nostalgic look at the original stop-frame series, animated by Ivor Wood and Barry Leith, and narrated by Bernard Cribbins.

Visitors can then uncover the narrative story behind Mike Batt’s beloved theme tune, ‘The Wombling Song’ and ‘join’ the band at an interactive selfie spot.

The exhibition concludes with The Wombles of today, illustrating their pertinence for the modern audience. Drawing on the litter-picking passions of the characters, this area features a 7ft sculpture of Great Uncle Bulgaria created by local artist, which is made from repurposed refuse.

A key closing part of the exhibition looks at The Wombles Community Charity, which champions sustainability through local environmental groups.

    Make an eco-conscious pledge

Visitors will be encouraged to make an environmental pledge at the end of the exhibition.

Through placing their hands on Great Uncle Bulgaria’s ‘paw print’, a promise can be made to ‘be more Womble’ e.g. start litter picking in your local area, or upcycle your rubbish – in the true Womble spirit!

    Womble Discovery Trail

As part of their visit, visitors can enjoy a Womble discovery trail around the 60-acre Heights of Abraham estate.

Here, they can learn about each of the characters and their values - which range from caring for the environment, but also for each other.

Meet and Greets with The Wombles

Visitors can meet The Wombles daily during the school holidays, until 1st September. They will appear at weekends only, until half term when they are in residence daily, from 25th October to 2nd November.

Book tickets to Womblemania: The Exhibition here.

To promote eco-friendly travel, The Wombles are offering £5 ‘green ticket’ discounts to visitors who arrive by train or bus.

Marcus Robertson, son of The Wombles creator Elisabeth Beresford, comments:

Mum’s creation of The Wombles was an instant success when it was launched on the BBC over 50 years ago. She would have been so pleased to see what is happening at The Heights of Abraham this summer. The Wombles were funny, kind role models but also each had their own character (and foibles) with a special place in British culture.”

David Thornton, Head of Marketing for the Heights of Abraham, adds:

“We feel a sense of responsibility to tell the heritage story of how The Wombles came about, what ‘Womble Mania' was about in the 70's, how The Wombles never really went away, and how they’ve relaunched with a new energy and vitality in the CGI world, and through digital channels, new books, and other activities.
“We want all our visitors to take the pledge to become more Womble! Discover a musical trip down memory lane with their greatest hits, including popular theme tune, ‘The Wombling Song’, and how the story has evolved, with digital Wombles entertaining today’s youngsters.
“Womblemania is a real immersion into The Womble philosophy. Elisabeth Beresford was ahead of her time in drawing attention to vital environmental efforts such as recycling. The Wombles were also kind, considerate, and loved sharing – and we’re hopeful that we can reignite this passion among young people.“

Situated in the Derbyshire hills, The Heights of Abraham runs tours underground into caverns, and overground via alpine-style cable cars 1,000 feet above sea level.

Womblemania: The Exhibition is running as a five-year installation.

    About the Wombles

The Wombles are small, furry creatures who live in hidden burrows and care deeply about the environment. From their home on Wimbledon Common, they collect rubbish, repurpose what they find, and show that small actions can lead to meaningful change.

Guided by the wise Great Uncle Bulgaria, each Womble brings something special. Alderney is bold and adventurous, Wellington is a brilliant young tech-whizz, and Orinoco is kind-hearted, if often a little sleepy. Tobermory can fix almost anything, and Madame Cholet brings warmth, wisdom and delicious cooking to the burrow. Together, they face challenges with humour, curiosity and care, because being a Womble means trying your best and never giving up.
