As the days grow shorter and the heating comes on, our homes begin to change – and our houseplants feel it. Less sunlight, drier air and fluctuating temperatures can leave even the hardiest varieties looking a little worse for wear. But winter doesn’t have to spell struggle for houseplant parents. Baby Bio®, the UK’s number one houseplant care brand, shares how a few simple adjustments and the right routine can keep indoor greenery healthy, happy and ready to burst back into life come spring.
Make the most of the light
Sunlight is in short supply during the colder months, so positioning becomes everything. Move plants closer to bright windows – south or west-facing spots are ideal – and rotate them every week, so all sides get their share of light. Keep their leaves clean too, as even a thin layer of dust can block rays. A quick spritz of Baby Bio® Leaf Shine not only removes dust but gives foliage a healthy, natural sheen and helps plants breathe better. In particularly gloomy spaces, a small grow light can fill in the gaps, especially for sun-loving species like aloe vera or jade plants.
Keep conditions comfortable
Plants like stability, and in winter that means protecting them from both chilly draughts and blasts of heat from radiators. Most houseplants are happiest between 16-24°C, so try to keep their environment steady. Central heating can dry the air dramatically, leaving delicate leaves crispy at the edges. To prevent this, group plants together and place them near a shallow tray filled with water and pebbles to create a pocket of humidity, or mist them occasionally with Baby Bio® Houseplant Feed & Mist. It offers a quick boost of hydration and nutrients, perfect for peace lilies, monsteras and ferns that crave a little extra moisture.
Water with care
If there’s one golden rule of winter plant care, it’s that less is more. Most plants slow their growth when the light fades, which means they drink far less water. Always check the soil before reaching for the watering can. If the top inch is dry, it’s time to water. If not, hold off a bit longer. To avoid shocking roots with cold water, use room-temperature water and feed sparingly – once a month with Baby Bio® Houseplant Food is ideal. It provides a gentle supply of essential nutrients that support healthy roots and strong leaves, even during dormancy. Succulents and cacti need even less – treat them occasionally with Baby Bio® Succulent Food or Baby Bio® Cactus Food, which deliver perfectly balanced nutrition for low-maintenance species.
Stay ahead of pests
Warm, dry homes can become a haven for pests like aphids and whiteflies, so keep an eye on the undersides of leaves. Look out for tiny insects, sticky residue or pale patches – early signs that pests have moved in. At the first sign of trouble, reach for Baby Bio® Houseplant Bug Killer Ultra. Its fast-acting, dual-action formula stops pests from feeding within an hour and provides up to eight weeks of protection, ideal for keeping infestations under control through winter.
To help prevent issues before they start, Baby Bio® Houseplant Fly Traps are a simple, chemical-free solution. The bright yellow traps naturally attract common indoor pests, keeping them safely away from delicate foliage. Take time to wipe down large leaves with a damp cloth, trim away yellowing growth and refresh the top layer of soil if it’s compacted. A little bit of care now will save far more effort later.
