Want to Gather Your Own Firewood? Why Owning a Woodland Might Be the Answer

As the nights draw in and wood burners and fireplaces glow back to life, the idea of gathering your own firewood feels appealing. But before you reach for the wheelbarrow and head into the nearest forest, it’s worth knowing that collecting fallen wood from public land, common land or Forestry England sites is not allowed. Every branch and log remains the property of the landowner, and removing it without permission can count as theft.

That doesn’t mean you can’t be hands-on with your firewood supply. For those who enjoy the idea of being involved in the process of selecting, cutting, seasoning, and stacking their own logs, one of the best options is to own a small piece of woodland.

Specialist organisations such as woodlands.co.uk make this surprisingly accessible, as they sell small parcels of broadleaf and coniferous woodland across the country, often from just an acre or two upwards. With your own woodland, you can legally cut and collect your own firewood, while also learning about woodland management, conservation and the satisfaction of producing your own sustainable fuel.

Beyond the firewood, small woodland ownership offers fresh air, a retreat from daily life, and the chance to be a guardian of local biodiversity. Many new owners discover that what starts as a practical way to feed a log burner soon becomes a cherished hobby and a legacy for family and friends.

So which firewood trees are best? With such a diversity of trees in UK woodlands, there are plenty of species to choose from, but not all logs are equal when it comes to the fire. Anton Baskerville at Woodlands.co.uk offers a guide on how the most common UK woods perform:

Oak: Dense, slow-burning and high heat logs with glowing embers that are great for overnight heat. Oak logs are best after 18–24 months of seasoning, and even then, their hardwood nature means splitting them can be a challenge!

Ash: The classic favourite but considerably reduced Ash tree numbers due to disease in the last decade. Ash logs burn well, with a bright flame and steady heat. They will burn ‘green’ (recently cut), though a year's seasoning gives the best results.

Birch: Birch logs with a year's seasoning will light quickly and burn brightly with good heat, but not for long. Keep seasoning Birch logs out of the rain as they rot easily.

Beech: Excellent heat and long burn, but must be well seasoned for 18 months+ as Beech logs retain their moisture. Fallen beech limbs are a firwood gathering favourite.

Conifers (Pine, Spruce, Larch): Quick to ignite, but resinous and smoky. Best seasoned at least 12 months to reduce sap content, but burn with a glorious woodland smell.

If the romance of crackling logs appeals, and you want to be part of the journey from tree to hearth, don’t head to the public forest with a saw. Look into owning your own patch of woodland instead. Then manage your patch of nature by carefully picking, cutting, seasoning and stacking the best logs for your stove or fireplace, and enjoy the warmth of knowing you made it happen sustainably from start to finish.
