Could Owning a Woodland Help Keep the Cold Out This Winter?

With a 500-litre heating oil delivery now costing around £610, and many rural homes still recalling the price spikes and cancelled deliveries earlier this year, a growing number of wood-burning households are looking at a more traditional source of heat: trees from their own woodlands.

For homes off the mains gas network, heating fuel usually means relying on a supplier, and on prices that can shift quickly in response to events far away. For households that already have a wood-burning stove or open fire, owning a small woodland offers a different approach. It gives them a renewable fuel supply they manage themselves, which costs nothing to replenish once the woodland is theirs.

“Once you own a woodland, the firewood it produces is essentially free; your contribution is time and effort rather than money,” says Anton Baskerville of woodlands.co.uk, which sells small woodlands across the UK. “Many of our owners use thinnings, fallen branches and managed felling to keep their stoves going year after year. There’s real satisfaction in knowing your warmth comes from trees you’ve looked after yourself.”

A well-managed broadleaf woodland grows continually, and careful thinning often improves its health and biodiversity. That means a modest woodland can provide a steady, sustainable supply of logs without depleting the trees.

For households that already use wood as part of their heating, the savings can add up. Every load of logs that comes from their own trees is one they no longer have to buy in, and for homes that run a stove alongside oil or LPG, a reliable supply of their own wood can mean leaning on the stove more and the boiler less, topping up the oil tank less often. “It won’t replace a heating system,” says Anton, “but for people already burning wood, having their own supply can take a real bite out of what they spend each winter, and gives them more independence from delivery schedules and price swings.”

It does take planning. Wood needs to season, often for a year or two, before it burns efficiently. Owners need suitable tools, some know-how, and an understanding of the rules on tree felling, including when a felling licence is required. “Woodland is a living resource,” adds Anton. “Good management means understanding what you have, harvesting thoughtfully and keeping the wood healthy for the future. Do that, and it will keep providing.”

Woodlands.co.uk sells woodlands typically between 3 and 6 acres, bringing ownership within reach of people beyond large estates and traditional landowners. Firewood is one draw among many: owners also value the wildlife, the time outdoors with family, and having a place to escape to.

For wood-burning households, a woodland of their own offers something increasingly appealing: lower fuel bills, a home-grown supply they control, and the pleasure of caring for a piece of the British countryside.
