Community groups invited to apply for latest round of NEZ funding

Charities, community groups and voluntary services across Newhaven are being encouraged to apply for a share of £30,000 funding through the latest round of the Newhaven Enterprise Zone (NEZ) Community Support Fund.
Applications are now open and groups have until Monday 31 August at 12 noon to submit their proposals.
The fund supports projects that improve the lives and wellbeing of local people, helping grassroots organisations to deliver regular activities, services and one-off experiences that make a real difference for all generations across the town.
Michelle Connors, programme manager at NEZ said: "We would especially encourage groups that haven't applied before to take a look at the fund. We're particularly keen to hear from volunteer-led organisations and projects that bring different generations together, whether that's through a one-off event or regular activities.
“Whether you're planning a new project, improving a community space or expanding the support you offer, this funding could help turn those plans into reality."
The NEZ Community Support Fund welcomes applications from charities, community groups and voluntary services delivering projects that:
· support children and young people
· strengthen community venues and activity spaces
· create opportunities for people of different generations to come together
· promote volunteering and community participation
· help build stronger, more connected neighbourhoods
· provide advice, advocacy or counselling for those in need
· encourage creativity and cultural activity.
Previous rounds have seen more than £37,000 awarded to organisations delivering projects that benefit communities across Newhaven.
Past recipients have included Newhaven and Seaford Sea Cadets which benefitted from £10,000 for its Our Port, Our Youth, Our Future project, helping secure training facilities and pay for the annual cost of their boat.
Sailhaven CIC used £9,000 of funding to support the restoration of a historic yacht for community sailing trips.
Fred Laloux, director of Sailhaven CIC, said: “We’re so grateful to Newhaven Enterprise Zone, which believes in our project. The sea is a hugely underutilised asset as yacht sailing is an unaffordable hobby for most. By creating this association, we are enabling the local youth to experience the benefits of what is literally on their doorstep.”
Other recipients have included Newhaven Gig Rowing Club (£6,000) to install a floating dock at Newhaven Marina, Newhaven and District Model Railway Club (£5,000) to create a quieter, more accessible space for neurodiverse members and Just Friends (£3,000) to expand activities tackling loneliness among older people.
Earlier rounds have also supported projects such as improvements to facilities at The Hillcrest Community Centre, helping refurbish community rooms used by dozens of local groups and residents.
