- Star-gazing and a star-rivalry-filled murder mystery event offer all an autumnal guest could desire
The place to be this October in England is Langley Castle Hotel in Northumberland, where two phenomenal events might give you all the excuse you need to book an extended stay and explore all the autumnal glories that the northern county has to offer.
The medieval hotel, build by knight Sir Thomas de Lucy in 1350, is luring guests in with a Starry Knight experience on October 2, run in conjunction with the world-famous Kielder Observatory. This is your chance to star-gaze in the darkest skies in England, in a Gold Tier-status Dark Sky Park, taking in the sight of millions of stars and both the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxy. In fact, the skies are so clear and free of light pollution that the Milky Way can even cast shadows on the Northumberland ground.
To help you make the most of it, Langley Castle’s Starry Knight package sees you checking in early, at 2pm, and then having a late three-course lunch (or early dinner) at 3.30pm. This gives you time to enjoy your food before you depart, by coach, for the Kielder Observatory, in the heart of the Kielder Forest, at 5.30pm. There, with expert help, you will be guided across the galaxy, using Kielder’s powerful telescopes and more. Once your star-gazing extravaganza is over, you will head back to Langley Castle and enjoy a cheeseboard and snifter.
This experience costs £420 per room (£210 for two people sharing) in Castle View, in the castle grounds, or £500 per room (£250 each for two people sharing) in a Feature Room within the castle. The price also includes a hearty Northumbrian breakfast before departure and guests can join the daily Battlements Tour, to discover more about the rich history of Langley Castle.
With so much to see and do, whether that is visiting the various Roman sites along Hadrian’s Wall, exploring Hexham, venturing to the Northumbrian coast, walking in the Northumberland National Park, or visiting Carlisle and Newcastle, you might be tempted to stay to October 10.
That evening, for a ticket price of £62.50 per person, you can be involved with the ‘stars’ in a different way. A murder mystery, named The Award Winners, will thrust you into a plot that sees Hollywood-style rivalries, scandals and back-stabbing brought to the fore. In fact, in this whodunnit, any of the award nominees could be the murderer, but it is up to you to interview very potential witness and discover the truth. Follow your nose, use your gut instinct and piece the evidence together, as you enjoy the goosebump-inducing setting of Langley Castle for this event.
A glass of prosecco on arrival and a three-course dinner is included in the ticket price, so you can truly have a fantastic evening out, even if you don’t stay over, being plunged into a world of fame, fortune and fatality.

Notes
Accommodation at Langley Castle can be arranged in a Feature or Deluxe room inside the castle itself, in the Castle View or Castle Lodge accommodation in the grounds, where there are both suites and rooms available, or in the two-bedroomed Toll Bar Luxury Villa self-catering accommodation. Guests staying in the latter can castle hop and have meals in the castle, if they wish, or else stay secluded in a cottage with private access and parking, patio area and all mod cons.
A mid-week October stay starts a cost of around £189 per night (for a room for two adults) in Castle Lodge accommodation, and costs from £214 per room for accommodation in Castle View. In both cases this is for those booking an early B&B package, which includes hearty Northumbrian breakfast served in the Josephine Restaurant.
Rooms inside the castle mid-week in October are priced from £325 per room. Weekend rates are slightly higher and guests wanting a dinner, bed and breakfast package will also pay slightly more.
The Toll Bar Luxury Village, in which four adults could stay, costs around £382 per night for a mid-week stay in October. Meals can be booked separately.
Ends
Langley Castle, built in 1350, is located in Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland and is one of the few authentic, fortified medieval castles in England. It has a rich history, with strong links to Jacobite rebellions, is located just a stone's throw from the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall and boasts features including battlements, seven-feet-thick walls, window seats set into the walls and the best example of medieval garderobes in Europe. It is one of the most exquisite wedding venues in the north and also offers a wide range of options when it comes to exclusive use, with the castle being available for weddings, family celebrations, Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, D&D-style events and a wide variety of corporate functions.
