A brand-new luxury villa with a versatile accommodation option has opened in Northumberland, offering guests not just designer accommodation but also the unique opportunity to ‘castle gaze’ and ‘castle hop’.
Toll Bar Luxury Villa at Langley Castle, sits in the shadow of what is regarded as the most authentic, fortified medieval castle in England. It is situated at the entrance to Langley Castle’s imposing gates, and at the bottom of its sweeping drive, but is accessible via its own private entrance, leading to private parking.
This is in a location close to Hexham, in the lower Tyne Valley and also on the A686 from Penrith, which the AA regards as one of the Ten Great Drives in England thanks, in part, to the dramatic ascent up Hartside.
The two-en-suite-roomed property is the realized vision of the Baron and Baroness of Langley, American owners, Dr Stuart and Mariann Madnick. Beautifully designed and equipped, it is a perfect romantic retreat or escapist haven and perfect for one or two couples.
Its unique selling point is the view that guests enjoy for free. This is of the fabulous 14th century castle, whose medieval walls have been largely untouched since their original construction in 1350. This stunning vista can be appreciated through the villa’s windows but also from a private and shielded-from-view outdoor terrace, on which to sip Prosecco or another favourite tipple.
Another plus point for this very different self-catering option is that its guests can castle hop. They can head into the castle to relax and dine in either the Drawing Room and Bar or the Josephine 2AA Rosette restaurant, indulge in an afternoon tea under the sparkling chandeliers or outside in the summerhouse, or enjoy a hearty Northumbrian breakfast inside the castle. Alternatively, they can stay completely independent and holed up in their luxury den.
As with all Langley Castle guests, they can also take advantage of the free daily Battlements Tour, which offers valuable insights into the castle’s rich and long history, as well as the chance to walk on the impressive battlements and take in the view.
Access to the castle for food and drink does depend on there being no exclusive-use event at the time but, if that is the case, there is the option of having a breakfast or picnic hamper delivered to the villa.
This ability to castle hop can give guests the very best of both worlds, bridging the self-catering and hotel experiences in a unique way. As another plus point, there is no minimum stay requirement for Toll Bar Villa guests.
A stay in the Toll Bar Luxury Villa at Langley Castle, which accommodates up to four guests, costs from around £395per night. Guests who take the castle hopping option can choose their food and drink from any of Langley Castle’s menus and can enjoy breakfast for £18 per person per day.
