Just the tonic! The secret to achieving a luscious lawn this season

A lush, green lawn is the pride of any garden, but achieving that perfect turf can be a challenge. And after months of low light and freezing, wet weather, it’s not unusual for lawns to look a little worse for wear, with many battling unsightly moss, uneven growth, or bare patches.

With spring around the corner, Angharad James, from the iconic British gardening brand Maxicrop, has some top tips for achieving a lawn that will have your neighbours green with envy.

Start with the basics

Healthy lawns need a solid foundation. The best time to get out in the garden and tend to your grass is on a dry day in early spring – usually around mid-March when the temperature begins to warm up and grass enters its active growth phase. Start by removing any debris and giving the grass a good rake to aerate the soil and prevent thatch build-up. Mow the lawn to remove approximately a third of the length. It can be tempting to cut it right back after months of being untouched, but cutting too short, too fast, is known as 'scalping' and can lead to disease and weed infestation.

Manage moss

Moss can be a major culprit behind patchy, lackluster lawns, and is often a result of excess water, shade, compacted soil, or poor air circulation. If left untreated, it can soon take over the grass entirely. The best way to prevent moss is to ensure lawns are regularly aerated and avoid overwatering, but if you do have a problem there are two ways to tackle it. The first is by manually removing the moss, either with a spring tine rake or scarifier. The second is by applying a moss killer such as Maxicrop’s Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic. This powerful 2-in-1 formula combines a natural seaweed base with ferrous sulphate and nitrogen to blacken moss within hours while promoting strong, healthy grass growth.

Replenish nutrients

For consistent results, lawns need to be fed with a balanced fertiliser containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK). Each element plays a vital part in a healthy lawn. Nitrogen promotes lush, green, dense foliage, phosphorous encourages strong root development and supports energy transfer, and potassium enhances stress resistance to drought, disease and cold weather. To add these essential nutrients, add Maxicrop’s Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic to your watering can or sprayer and apply evenly. The unique blend of NPK helps stimulate rapid regrowth, while the sustainably sourced seaweed extract provides additional benefits by enhancing the soil’s natural health and resilience.

Rejuvenate bare patches

Bare patches in the lawn can be an eyesore, but with a little care, they can be easily repaired. Prepare the area by removing any weeds or moss and loosening the soil with a rake, then overseed by applying a generous sprinkling of grass seed. Lightly rake the seeds into the soil and water gently but thoroughly. To encourage strong and healthy regrowth, treat the area with Maxicrop Moss Killer and Lawn Tonic. Its nutrient-rich seaweed formula not only promotes faster germination but also strengthens young grass against stress and disease for a more hardy lawn. Keep the area moist until the new grass establishes, and soon, those bare spots will be a thing of the past.
