The Alpine Hotel That Was Born From a Railway

  • Parkhotel Holzner was built by Rittnerbahn AG - the company behind the historic Renon Railway - with construction starting in 1906 as part of the railway's development up to the Ritten plateau
  • The hotel reopened as Hotel Oberbozen in 1908, the same year the railway reached full operation
  • As European Mobility Week (16–22 September) puts the spotlight on sustainable travel, Parkhotel Holzner remains a rare working example of rail-led Alpine tourism, more than a century on
  • Guests can still reach the hotel entirely without a car: the Renon cable car connects Bolzano to Oberbozen in around 12 minutes, and the same historic narrow-gauge railway that shaped the plateau's early tourism still runs from Oberbozen through Lichtenstern to Klobenstein

Long before car travel opened up the Alps, a railway did. In 1906, engineers working for Rittnerbahn AG began building a hotel on the newly accessible Ritten plateau, 1,200 metres above Bolzano, as part of the same project that was laying track up the mountain. That hotel, designed in the Swiss Alpine style by engineer Joseph Riehl, first opened in 1907 as Hotel Maria Schnee - closing again shortly after when the railway ran into technical difficulties. On 29 February 1908, the line reached full operation, and the hotel reopened under new name and new ownership: Hotel Oberbozen, run by Hans Holzner and his wife Maria. It was an early guest, Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria, youngest daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who helped put the fledgling hotel on the map.

Today, as Parkhotel Holzner, the property is marking well over a century since that first, railway-built incarnation, and the connection to the line that made it possible hasn't gone anywhere. Guests can still leave the car behind entirely: the Renon cable car runs from central Bolzano, just 500 metres from the main train station, up to Oberbozen in around 12 minutes. From there, the same historic narrow-gauge railway, one of the last of its kind in South Tyrol, continues on through Lichtenstern to Klobenstein, letting guests explore the plateau exactly as the first visitors did over a hundred years ago.

It's a fitting story for European Mobility Week, which runs 16–22 September and puts sustainable, car-free travel in the spotlight across Europe. Parkhotel Holzner isn't adapting to that conversation - it was arguably built for it, an early example of rail-led Alpine tourism at a time when reaching the mountains meant relying on exactly this kind of infrastructure.

Now family-run across four generations, the hotel pairs that heritage with a Green Michelin-starred restaurant, an expansive spa and family-focused programming - but it's the railway connection that sets its origin story apart from almost any other hotel in the Alps.
