Stuart recommends swapping plastic décor for naturally sourced or foraged materials such as evergreen foliage, pinecones, berries, lichen-covered twigs, and dried botanicals.

“These items break down harmlessly when the season is over,” he explains. “Avoiding glitter, plastics, and artificial snow makes a big difference, and natural décor looks far more elegant.”

Suggested decorative ideas include:

• Garlands made from ivy, pine, and twine
• Dried orange slices threaded with natural string
• Pinecones grouped in bowls or hung on ribbon
• Winter branches arranged in floor vases for a sculptural effect
• Seed heads (teasel, honesty, allium) sprayed lightly with water and left natural for a frosted look outdoors

Stuart's simple woodland centrepiece idea:

1. Start with a base – A shallow wooden tray, slate board, or even a slice of log makes a perfect natural foundation.
2. Add greenery – Arrange small clusters of evergreen foliage along the centre; pine and fir give structure, while ivy adds soft movement.
3. Layer in texture – Include pinecones, hazelnuts, conkers, moss, dried apple slices, seed heads or delicate twigs.
4. Introduce height – Slot in a few taller winter branches or dried teasels for shape.
5. Finish with soft candlelight – Use beeswax or soy candles in sturdy holders, placed safely away from foliage.
6. Keep it fresh – Lightly mist foliage every couple of days or replace sprigs if they dry out.

“The key is to let the natural materials shine,” says Stuart. “A woodland centrepiece feels calm, organic, and rooted in the season. Guests always ask where it came from - and the answer is simply: the woods.”
