Stay in a Castle Infused With Romance

Ladies and their knights in shining armour can enjoy a truly special Valentine’s Day, if they head to what is regarded as the most authentic fortified English castle hotel in England – a castle also brimming over with romance.

Langley Castle, located in rural Northumberland, just a short distance from Hexham and Hadrian’s Wall, has long been a bolthole at which eloping couples tie the knot but is also an amazing venue in which to spend the most romantic night of the year.

A fairy-tale getaway to Langley Castle can see a couple enjoying a night in a four-poster bed inside the 14th century castle, or relaxing with strawberries and champagne in more contemporary luxury accommodation in Castle View. It’s all down to whether your notion of romance is that of being inside seven-feet-thick castle walls or flinging open the curtains and gazing at the castle, complete with its incredible battlements and breath-taking architecture.

There are five Feature Rooms and four Deluxe rooms inside the castle, where rooms have a variety of different aspects that can appeal to couples, with these ranging from elevated and cosy we-time window seats set high into the walls, to relaxing sauna and spa bath.

Castle View accommodation is graded, so you can choose a room to suit your romance budget, whether you wish to opt for superior suite or still-lovely standard room.

Either way, you can relax inside the castle, cuddling up on a Drawing Room sofa in front of a roaring log fire, whilst seeing light cascade through the huge feature window, or admiring the sparkling chandeliers.

A romantic, candlelit dinner can be enjoyed in the Josephine Restaurant, which boasts two-AA Rosettes and mouth-watering dishes, served at intimate tables for two, where you can gaze into each other’s eyes.

And, should you wish to find a special place to propose, and are not bold enough to do so whilst on the daily Battlements Tour (to which all guests are treated and non-residents are welcome to book), you can always ask the Langley Castle team whether you can have private access to the battlements, so as to go down on one knee.

If you prefer, other suitable proposal spots would be in the private chapel, also located on the battlements, in the forested grove, in which woodland weddings are held, in the Langley Castle summerhouse or tipi, or in a variety of different places within the 10-acre grounds. A proud peacock may even strut by, having witnessed your romantic gesture.

Langley Castle’s own special guide to elopement weddings offers lots of inspiration about romantic things to do in wider Northumberland, so you can turn a Valentine’s Day break into an extended lovers’ trip away, if you wish. Romantic breaks at Langley Castle can be booked all year round. On February 14, prices range from £140 for bed and breakfast, for a room in Castle Lodge in the grounds, and from £299 for a room inside the castle (bed and breakfast). Prices inclusive of dinner for two are £250 and £409 respectively. Guests can also join the daily Battlements Tour.

To book, call 01434 688888 and discuss any special requests with the team, so as to make your romantic trip even more tailored and special. To book online without special requests, or at any other time of year, head to www.langleycastle.co.uk

Editors notes

Langley Castle, built in 1350, is located in Langley-on-Tyne, Northumberland and is one of the few authentic, fortified medieval castles in England. It has a rich history, with strong links to Jacobite rebellions, is located just a stone's throw from the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall and boasts features including battlements, seven-feet-thick walls, window seats set into the walls and the best example of medieval garderobes in Europe. It is one of the most exquisite wedding venues in the north and also offers a wide range of options when it comes to exclusive use, with the castle being available for weddings, family celebrations, Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, D&D-style events and a wide variety of corporate functions.
