In 2025, Vienna is commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Johann Strauss II, the world-renowned "Waltz King," whose music continues to captivate audiences around the world. From immersive exhibitions to breathtaking performances, the Austrian capital is amid a year-long celebration of the man whose iconic compositions, including Austria’s second national anthem, The Blue Danube, helped shape the city’s rich musical heritage.

Born in Vienna in 1825, Strauss II is the composer behind over 500 works that transformed 19th-century European music. His influence can still be felt today, as his waltzes remain synonymous with Vienna’s cultural identity. The city has come together in a vibrant celebration of his life and music, inviting visitors to experience his legacy in both traditional and innovative ways.

Exhibitions Across the City

Bringing Strauss back to life, The House of Strauss now features a museum about the Waltz King in the refurbished original venue at Casino Zögernitz. Waltz king Johann Strauss played in the Strauss Hall. Nowadays, Strauss research also has its home here andtar chef Stefan Glantschnig creates wonderful Viennese cuisine in the House of Strauss Kulinarium. A visit to the House of Strauss offers an immersive journey into Vienna’s 19th-century entertainment culture, with evocative scenes from grand ballrooms, concert halls, and captivating stories from the era. A specially developed multilingual app guides visitors through the exhibition, providing rich historical context along the way. The tour is narrated by Thomas Strauss, the great-great-great-great-grandson of Johann Strauss I.

In celebration of Johann Strauss II’s 200th anniversary, the Theatermuseum Vienna is hosting a special exhibition, Johann Strauss – The Exhibition, until 17th August 2025. This immersive experience delves into the life of the "Waltz King," showcasing his iconic music, personal life, and the influence of his works on theatre and politics. Visitors can explore rare artefacts, including the original score for Die Fledermaus, and learn about Strauss’ enduring legacy in the city that made his music legendary.

Iconic Strauss Experiences

The celebrations will extend to various concert halls and venues where Strauss’ music took centre stage. All of Vienna’s major music institutions will be involved, including the Musikverein (Vienna Music Society), the Wiener Konzerthaus, the MusikTheater an der Wien, the Vienna Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera. Visitors will be able to enjoy Strauss experiences in surprising locations – both indoor and outdoor – in all 23 of the city’s districts, including unusual venues such as the Central Cemetery and at the annual Danube Island Festival. These will be complemented by special themed days for key dates such as Strauss’ birthday on 25th October.

For those wishing to follow in the footsteps of the "Waltz King," Vienna offers a range of guided tours, including a special Johann Strauss Audio Walk on the ivie app. This digital guide takes visitors to 11 key locations throughout the city, including Strauss’ former apartment, the Johann Strauss Monument in Stadtpark, the Musikverein (Vienna’s Music Society), and MusikTheater an der Wien. Vienna’s love for Strauss is showcased at landmarks that highlight both his personal and professional life. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss' birth, Vienna’s Johann Strauss Museum has unveiled an innovative permanent exhibition titled "New Dimensions." This immersive, interactive experience uses cutting-edge technology, including GPS-tracked audio guides, to lead visitors through a journey of Strauss’ life. The exhibition, housed in a striking Art Deco building, features audiovisual installations, modern objects, and captivating visuals that bring the biography of the "Waltz King" to life. Covering two floors and offering a 75-minute experience, visitors can explore Strauss' career, family, global fame, and his impact on music, culminating in an immersive final room that presents pivotal moments in his life. For creative visitors, the exhibition also offers a chance to compose their own waltz, taking home a personalised audio file.

A Tribute to the Future: Strauss in Space

As part of the bicentennial celebrations, Vienna is also embarking on a historic mission of cosmic proportions. In collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), The Blue Danube Waltz will be broadcast into space on 31st May 2025. This celestial tribute to Strauss will be transmitted from Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), performed by the Wiener Symphoniker, and sent towards the Voyager 1 spacecraft, making its way into the farthest reaches of the universe. The event will be part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the European Space Agency, marking an unforgettable moment where the timeless elegance of Vienna’s most famous waltz will echo across the cosmos.

Whether it’s listening to the music of Strauss at a festival, wandering through the city’s historic music venues, or being immersed in Strauss’ melodies during a city tour, visitors to Vienna in 2025 will have the opportunity to experience the city’s rich musical legacy in new and exciting ways. The celebrations will continue throughout the year, providing an immersive look at the enduring influence of Johann Strauss II, whose music is as much a part of Vienna as its grand palaces and charming streets.
