Industry experts and academic leaders share collective knowledge on the role of sustainable marketing in travel and why it is critical to the industry now  

 

8th June 2023: The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and Lemongrass Marketing will present an inaugural travel industry webinar on Sustainable Travel Marketing, hosted by The Conscious Travel Foundation

 

The webinar, which takes place on 28th June at 1:00 PM (BST) will be hosted by The Conscious Travel Foundation, Charlie Thompson, Director of Commercial Reach and Influence at CISL and Mirjam Peternek McCartney, founder and CEO of Lemongrass Marketing. 

 

Open to The Conscious Travel Foundation members, and, for the first time, the wider industry (in return for a £10 donation to The Conscious Travel Foundation’s Charitable Fund), the webinar will explore several topics. These include the role that marketing currently plays in the economy and in society, the difference between sustainable marketing and marketing sustainability, and an introduction to the four themes of marketing impact. It will also cover how marketing drives consumption and why ‘leisure’ - including tourism - is one of the five areas of high-impact consumption. There will be an opportunity for live Q&A at the end of the session. 

 

Charlie Thompson comments: “Sustainable marketing is about realigning the purpose of the marketing function and industry with a sustainable future, rewiring the way marketing is practiced, reclaiming the skills and competencies of marketers and creatives in service of sustainability, and taking full accountability for the economic, physical, psychological and ethical impacts of marketing, media and creative work.  

 

“This session will aim to answer the many questions that travel leaders have, including the business elements that often challenge sustainable transformation, such as how to bring stakeholders on the journey in order to facilitate real and systemic change.” 

 

Olivia Cryer and Maudie Tomlinson, founders at The Conscious Travel Foundation, add: “The travel industry as a whole must have more open and interactive conversations around sustainable travel practices. It's our mission to enable this through education, collaboration and thought leadership and learning from industry experts. This webinar is a great example of cross-industry expertise coming together to inspire travel leaders to make change happen, at pace.” 

 

Mirjam Peternek McCartney concludes: “Sustainable marketing doesn’t need to be daunting. Tourism is rapidly changing, which means the promotion of travel products and services must change too. Sustainable marketing is appropriate and necessary if the tourism industry intends to be a force for good and this webinar will collectively aim to address that.”
