Guests at Northumberland castle hotel, Langley Castle, near Hexham, are shamelessly demolishing a castle that has stood for 676 years. Luckily it's because they are not only sleeping in the castle but eating it too!
The arrival of Scottish chef and new Culinary Director, Mark Greenaway, has been accompanied by a drive to make food a major reason for visiting the 4-star castle hotel. Now, an innovative and spectacular new chocolate dessert is going down a storm amongst guests and non-residents dining in the 2AA Rosette ‘Josephine’s Restaurant’.
The dessert is an extraordinary edible version of its 14th-century fortified castle and smacks of Greenaway’s culinary talent.
The chef, who has appeared on BBC's Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen and Sunday Brunch, run an acclaimed Edinburgh restaurant, which held three AA Rosettes, and been behind Grazing by Mark Greenaway at Edinburgh's Caledonian Hotel, has created a truly intricate dessert fashioned into the unmistakeable shape of Langley Castle. The chocolate mousse delight even comes complete with finer details of the castle’s distinctive medieval architecture.
Made using a specially commissioned mould, the miniature chocolate castle is a chocolate mousse and sponge dish, flavoured with mandarin gel and vanilla and served with a refreshing mandarin sorbet. The combination of rich chocolate, citrus and vanilla delivers a sophisticated flavour experience.
Diners who have spent time admiring the castle's imposing seven-foot-thick walls can now enjoy the rather unusual experience of demolishing their own version of the historic fortress, one delicious spoonful at a time.
Mark Greenaway says: ""There's something wonderfully mischievous about giving guests the opportunity to demolish a castle that has stood for more than 675 years. Fortunately, this one is a lot easier to conquer!”
With special deals on accommodation currently available to November 30, chocoholics should not miss out on the opportunity to eat, sleep and repeat order the chocolate castle at Langley Castle.

It has a rich history, with strong links to Jacobite rebellions, is located just a stone's throw from the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall and boasts features including battlements, seven-feet-thick walls, window seats set into the walls and the best example of medieval garderobes in Europe.
